Achnasoul Cottage, Marybank, Ross-shire

The original cottage at Achnasoul had very little headroom in the attic bedrooms, and small, dark living spaces. But, how to extend the building without the scale of the extension overpowering the character of the cottage? The solution was to introduce a split floor level, making use of slightly sloping ground levels.

The resulting new lounge, and master bedroom above, are filled with light .. and plenty of headroom.

Lowering the floor level in the new lounge has also allowed a more direct connection to the garden, through patio doors.
